ANIMUS ACCENSUS T-Shirt

Inspired by our exploration of animus as the masculine Roman soul, ANIMUS ACCENSUS means a masculine soul that has been set on fire with inspiration to do virtuous deeds and attain honor.

It started with this quote from Sallust's history of The Jugurthine War.

“I have often heard that in the past Q. Maximus, P. Scipio, and other eminent men of our state used to say that their SOUL (the word used in Latin is AN-ih-mus) was most irresistibly fired to accomplish acts of manly virtue when they gazed upon the wax images of their ancestors. To be sure, it was not the wax or the image that had such power in itself, but the memory of things done that nourished the flame in the breast of extraordinary men, and that flame did not die down until their manly virtue had equalled that fame and glory.”

We looked for a Latin translation of an "animus" that was "fired up" or "set on fire" and the best option was ANIMUS ACCENSUS.

“Animus” is the standard philosophical term used by Cicero, Seneca, and others for the spirited or rational part of the Roman man.

“Accensus” (from accendo, accendere) is the classical way to express “kindled,” “set on fire,” or “ignited,” especially in a metaphorical or philosophical sense. It is frequently used with animus in Roman literature to mean the spirit/mind has been aroused, enflamed, or set ablaze with passion, courage, or purpose.

Examples from classical authors:

mihi in dies magis animus accenditur — “my spirit is kindled more every day”

animus ardebat — “the spirit was burning/on fire”

For obvious reasons, this combination of ideas seemed perfect for the Order of Fire and Solar Idealism.
