IANVS (Pronounced: Ya-NOOS)

Janus is the Roman god of gates, passages, beginnings, and endings. Janus is often referred to as the oldest of gods, and he seems to have predated most or all of them. At the beginning of things, he was one with Chaos, and took the shape of a two-faced god at the moment of differentiation.

In Solar Idealism, IANVS symbolizes the different face and morality we have for strangers outside the perimeter, and those inside the perimeter. Janus is the “moral gear shift” mentioned in Becoming a Barbarian. Every man presides over many perimeters, and Janus represents his role as the sentry who decides who comes across the threshold.

IANVS also symbolizes opportunities presented to us in life. Doors are opened for us (and closed to us) all the time. Each door we walk through opens up a new reality, and leaves another behind.

IANVS is pictured on this shirt as a Roman soldier or Centurion, posted outside the gates of the city, sternly watching the horizon with one face and benevolently watching the living city inside the walls.
